“The Financial District” and The Da Vinci Code: From Monument to Blackfriars
Start off at the Monument to the Great Fire of London and check out the Victorian-era Leadenhall Market. Take a look at the modern architectural feat that is the Lloyds Building and explore the history and culture of The City’s financial institutions – from coffee houses to the Royal Exchange, and on. You’ll take in the Bank of England, Christopher Wren’s City churches, and St Paul’s Cathedral. A tour around Fleet Street, home to England’s famous newspapers, will bring you to The Temple, and a scene from The Da Vinci Code!
Cosmopolitan Soho to Covent Garden: From Soho to Covent Garden
This walk begins in Soho, where fashionable shops rub shoulders with rather seedier establishments. Wander through China Town and then onto busy Leicester Square, and then Trafalgar Square where Nelson stands, sword in hand, atop his column. After a ramble through peaceful gardens where the River Thames once flowed, you’ll come to the beautiful Somerset House. Pause for a moment at the Royal Courts of Justice and finish off the tour with a drink (or an opera!) at Covent Garden.
Walking the Thames: From Westminster Bridge to London Bridge
Starting at County Hall and the amazing London Eye, this walk takes you on to the South Bank Centre and the Oxo Tower where you can pop in for a bit of boutique shopping. Next, take in some art at the imposing Tate Modern with its fantastic views of St Paul’s Cathedral. After passing the Millennium Bridge, you’ll go back in time 400 years to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, soak up the history of Southwark and Southwark Cathedral, and finish up at “London’s Larder” – the Borough Market.
East End Markets: From Columbia Road to Spitalfields
This walk takes you through one of London’s most intriguing and multi-cultural neighbourhoods. You’ll see the church where the funeral for the Kray Twins was held, the streets where Jack the Ripper roamed and the pubs and restaurants where many of the country’s hottest artists hang out, among them Tracey Emin. Starting out at the Columbia Road flower market, you’ll learn some of the history of Barnet Grove, have a chance to nip into the trendy shops in Cheshire Street and soak up the market banter in Brick Lane. Spitalfields Market comes next and you’ll finish up in the fascinating re-created 17th-century home of a family of silk-weavers.
Politics and Royalty: From Whitehall to Piccadilly
This walk starts at Whitehall, the seat of British power, and takes you on to not-to-be-missed Westminster Abbey. A ramble through St James’s Park will bring you to Buckingham Palace where you can check whether the Queen is in residence. After a wander through Regency London – St James’s and Piccadilly– we’ll end up in love with the city, under the statue of Eros at Piccadilly Circus.
